A Clinical Evaluation of Cefadroxil in Pneumonia

Abstract
Cefadroxil, a new oral cephalosporin antibiotic which is almost completely absorbed from gastrointestinal tract, uneffected by the presence of food in stomach, has a serum half-life approximately twice that of other cephalosporins, was evaluated in the treatment of 15 patients with pneumonia who were admitted to the Dept, of Int. Med., Chung Nam National University Hospital from July, 1981 to January, 1982.
In the 15 cases, 9 cases had underlying diseases; 2 cases of pulmonary tuberculosis, 2 cases of congestive heart failure, 1 case respectively of lung cancer, chronic bronchitis, diabetes mellitus, liver cirrhosis and cerebral hemorrhage.
Identified bacteriae in the 15 cases were; Streptococcus pneumoniae 9 cases, Staphylococcus aureus 3 cases, Klebsiella pneumoniae 2 cases, Haemophilus influenzae 1 case.
Results of treatment in the 15 cases were; cure 13 cases, partial response I case and no response 1 case. The response rate was 93.3%. The two organisms persisted on cefadroxil treatment were Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae. As of side effects, skin rash and pururitus in the one case and gastric cramp in one case were observed.
